BIO50}hotel

exhibition hotel

BIO50}hotel is a temporary hotel established at the MAO. It critically challenges tourism connected to exhibitions, in this case BIO50, by actively interfering with its curatorial approach. Nanotourists will be hosted in the museum free of charge and asked to contribute to the Biennial in return by actively participating in BIO50 events or by suggesting their own lectures, exhibitions, round tables and workshops among others. Furthermore, they take part in a 1:1 action by organizing their accommodation, repositioning, using and testing the exhibited items to confront the generic hotel room setup.

More about

Nowadays traveling virtually and physically is a must but resources and free time are often limited. Implying an investment of money and time, tourists’ demands are often connected to possible opportunities instead of mere entertainment.

BIO50}hotel is questioning the definition of tourists generally without interaction with the local community and environment by focusing on the concept of exchange.

BIO50}hotel attempts to define an interactive relation between the Biennial and the visitors, considering a mutual exchange of contents as a potential for critical interpretations of the exhibition as well as a platform for multiple connections and new contents.

Rather than mere cultural consumers or passive spectators BIO50}hotel guests are actively implementing the contents and interacting directly with the biennial program and exhibition according to multiple levels of participation.

During the exhibition period BIO50}hotel is open to host a broad variety of participants (designers, artists, researchers, scholars, craftsmen, chefs, journalists, musicians…) local or not, who will contribute to the cultural discussion within BIO50.

The guests’ events will be open to the public and documented on BIO50} hotel’s blog which will virtually store all the guests’ contributions and make them accessible for everyone.

Nanotourists are encouraged to customize their accommodation space as well as question the exhibition itself tracing a collective narrative of accumulation/destruction processes.

BIO50}hotel is challenging the museum as underused cultural infrastructure beyond its primary activity and time frame by proposing alternative uses during its usual closure.
